Therapeutic Options

manual therapy

The therapy of a herniated disc usually begins with pain-relieving medications and physiotherapeutic actions such as heat, dispositionings, relaxation and gymnastics.

A surgical treatment is only recommended when severe impairing problems, increasing paralysis or no improvement are visible. Surgery is usually also necessary when the herniated disc leads to sensibility defects in the genital area.

Sequestrectomy

The surgery consists of the excision of the prolapsed cartilage tissue (Sequestrectomy). There are different methods from excision of the prolapsed tissue via endoscope up to removal of the disturbing disc material via a small open operation.

In general, those surgeries quickly lead to a decrease in pain. However, the lack of tissue in the disc remains and cannot be replaced by the disc itself. Through this the disc is impaired in its function and the degeneration is not stopped. Further degeneration again leads to back pain.
